MFA's Green Initiative

Green Initiatives

MFA is Going Green!

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, buildings account for more than 39 percent of total energy consumption, 38 percent of carbon emissions in our atmosphere, 30 percent of raw materials waste in our landfills, and 12 percent of potable water consumption. Increased awareness of this reality in recent years has led to a growing imperative for leaders in the building sector to respond with efforts to reduce this environmental impact. Similarly, awareness has grown within the affordable housing community, which recognizes that energy-efficient, environmentally friendly design and building methodologies can make significant contributions to both environmental protection and community sustainability, and can create housing that is both healthy and less costly for residents to own and operate.

To that end, the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority's (MFA) Board of Directors and staff worked together to incorporate a number of “green” initiatives in MFA's 2007-08 Strategic Plan with the goal of promoting efficient, healthy and environmentally friendly building practices in affordable housing throughout the state of New Mexico.
