Weatherization

For the last 12 years, the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority has administered about $5 million a year for New Mexico Energy$mart, New Mexico's weatherization program. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, MFA will receive an additional $26.8 for weatherization services throughout the state.

The federal dollars will allow MFA's subgrantees to perform up to $6,500 in weatherization services in each home, up from the previous $3,000 limit. In addition, families at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level will be eligible to apply for assistance, up from 150 percent.

Do I qualify?

Whether you own or rent, live in a single-family home or a mobile home, you can apply for assistance. If you rent, your landlord must sign an agreement that gives you certain tenancy protections. This agreement must be signed before weatherization services can be performed.

Preference is given to persons over 60 years of age, persons with disabilities and, in some cases, families with children. If someone in your household receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), you are automatically eligible.

Families at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for weatherization services. Income limits are provided below.

What can I expect to be done in my home?

After performing an energy audit, a trained inspector will determine the best energy conservation measures for your home. The inspector will also make sure your home meets safety codes. The inspector will then meet with you to explain how the weatherization crew will conduct the work. Throughout the weatherization process, the health and safety of your household remain a priority. After the weatherization work is completed, an inspector will return to make certain that everything is working properly.

Some typical weatherization work that may be done to your home include:

  • Weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows
  • Replacing broken glass panes or windows
  • Installing insulation, including on water heaters and in attics
  • Tuning up, repairing or replacing the furnace or heating unit
  • Installing carbon monoxide detectors
  • Replacing incandescent bulbs with CFL's
  • Replacing a high-energy consuming refrigerator with an energy-efficient one
